Chauvinism is the name given to a person who is extremely patriotic or devoted to his own nation or category. Napoleon had a soldier who was very passionate to him that he would go to any extreme to prove it. His name was Nicolas Chauvin and thus this phrase is derived from. Now-a-days this word is widely used in a insulting manner. Americans always feel superior when compared to others like Russians, the Chinese, the Japanese and more but they know very little about their own history and their chauvinism is based on ignorance. They have developed a thought that their culture is the oldest with lots of depth and sophistication. Many people from other nations think the very opposite of what the Americans feel.
